🌾 Joseph – A Faith That Carries Through
Devotions from the Life of a Dreamer with Character

πŸŒ‘ 14.God Works in the Dark
When everything is silent – yet something happens

πŸ‘£ Introduction

There are seasons when our lives seem surrounded by darkness. Nothing moves. No answer comes. No door opens. We pray – and hear only silence. We hope – and see no change. We wonder whether God has forgotten us.

Joseph knew this silence well. His days in prison felt like an endless wait. Nothing indicated that God was writing his story. Yet while Joseph felt no movement, heaven was moving more than he imagined. God was working – hidden, quiet, invisible. Exactly where Joseph could not see it.

🎯 Devotion

Darkness has a unique way of making us feel small. It steals our sense of direction, our sense of time, our sight. Joseph sat in such darkness. A prison beneath the ground. A world without windows. A place where hope dies quietly.

And yet – right in that darkness, God was at work. Not visibly, not loudly, not immediately, but unstoppable.

It is often this way: We stand at the edge of a sea like Israel at the Red Sea, pressured by enemies, with no option but despair. We long for a sign, an open door, a clear word – and instead God says,
β€œBe still. I am at work.”

Being still when everything pushes and presses against us – that is hard. But it is a trust deeper than answers.

Joseph could not force his rescue. He could not change his situation. He only knew: God had not dropped him. And while he worked, served, and remained faithful, God was forming something in secret that Joseph never would have imagined.

God’s work does not begin at the moment of the breakthrough.
It begins much earlier – often in moments we misinterpret as β€œnothing happening.”

So it was with Joseph. His name was spoken in the palace long before the messenger came for him. Pharaoh received his dream long before Joseph heard of it. God arranged steps, encounters, dreams, thoughts – invisible to Joseph, but purposeful for the story.

This is how God works today, too.
Darkness does not mean stagnation.
Silence does not mean absence.
And waiting does not mean God has forgotten what He promised you.

Look at the disciples after the crucifixion. For three days they believed everything was lost. Death seemed final, darkness unbeatable. Yet while they mourned, while they wept, while they saw nothing – heaven was moving. Resurrection happened in the dark, in a place no one saw. The greatest miracle in human history was not born in the light, but in the hidden place behind a sealed stone.

God is not inactive when you see nothing.
He is nearer, deeper, more at work than you know.

πŸ’‘ Thoughts for your heart

God’s silence is not a sign of His absence.
His stillness is a space where something grows.
Deep roots of faith are formed in the dark.
God often works the strongest before you notice anything.

πŸ’Ž What we can learn from Joseph

Waiting seasons are God’s workshop.
Not every darkness is a threat – some is preparation.
Faith means trusting God before anything moves.
God is already writing the solution while we still live in the tension.

πŸ‘£ Practical steps

When everything is silent – seek God’s nearness, not a quick answer.
Trust that God is working behind the scenes.
Let waiting shape you, not break you.
Speak honestly with God about your darkness – He listens.

πŸ’ Questions to reflect on

Where am I experiencing silence – and what does it do to me?
Where might God already be working in secret, though I see nothing?
Which fear calls me to act, while God calls me to trust?
What does it mean for me to β€œbe still” while God fights for me?

πŸ™ Prayer

Father,
you see my darkness, my questions, my longing for change.
You know how hard it is for me to wait and be still.
I ask you: open my eyes to Your work,
even when I cannot see it yet.

Strengthen my trust in Your silence.
Let me rest in the certainty
that You fight for me and lead my story.
Fill my heart with peace
until the light breaks through again.

Amen.

πŸ”‘ Key thought of the day

God does not begin working when you see it –
but long before, in the dark.

🌿 Blessing to close

May the Lord who works in the dark
and prepares miracles in hidden places
walk with you through every silent hour.

May He give you trust when you see no answer.
May He give you courage when you see only fog.
May His light rise over you at the right time.

May He lead you step by step
out of darkness into His bright land.

Amen.
