✨ Devotional & Story

You can almost hear God’s voice trembling in this verse – not as a strict judge, but as a loving Father. “Oh that they had such a heart as this…” – it sounds like longing. God doesn’t merely want us to do what is right – He wants us to want it. He wants our heart to hear because it loves.

That’s exactly what happened with Lena.

She sat in church, arms crossed, gaze downcast. It was Mother’s Day, and the pastor was speaking about a heart that listens to God. Normally she would have only half-listened, as she often did. But this time something struck her. Not the pastor’s words so much as the tone behind them: yearning. Love.

Later she asked her mother:
“Why are you a Christian? Because that’s just what people do?”
Her mother smiled:
“No, because I realized: God wants my heart. Not my perfect obedience. I chose to trust Him – not because I had to, but because I wanted to.”

Lena fell silent. Something stirred within her. She remembered a decision where she knew exactly what was right, yet chose otherwise. Not out of stubbornness – but because her heart wasn’t ready.

And that is what God says in Deuteronomy 5:29: “Oh, that they had such a heart as this…”
God doesn’t long for external compliance. He doesn’t want a checklist; He wants relationship. A heart that willingly loves, trusts, and lets itself be guided. A heart that hears.

As Ellen White writes:
“God accepts no unwilling service. Love, the principle that prevails in heaven, must also rule in our hearts.”
— Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 97

That evening, Lena knelt in prayer for the first time in a long while.
Not because she had to.
But because she wanted to.

“God,” she whispered, “I don’t know how this works – but I give You my heart. Change it.”

Because here is the miracle: you don’t have to be perfect to walk with God. You only need to be willing to give Him your heart. He will take care of the rest.

🧠 For Reflection

• Which decisions do I make from my true heart – and which do I make “just because that’s how it’s done”?
• Have I ever honestly opened my heart to God – without a mask, without playing a role?

🙏 Prayer

Lord, today I give You not only my thoughts but my heart. Give me a heart that seeks You, trusts You, and truly learns to love Your ways. Grant me the desire not merely to “function,” but to genuinely follow You. Amen.
