9.1 “Instead Let There Be Thanksgiving”
Paul encourages believers in Ephesians 5:1–2 to walk in love and be “imitators of God,” meaning they should align their conduct according to the example of Christ’s love manifested in His sacrificial death. This call to imitate God suggests that their behavior should be characterized by love and devotion to offer a pleasing sacrifice and imitate God.
9.2 Walking as Children of Light
Paul warns in Ephesians 5:6 against the seduction of “empty words” that might lead to the acceptance that sexual sins are tolerable. He emphasizes that the wrath of God awaits those who continue in disobedience and sins. His exhortation to not associate with the sinners but to walk as “children of light” and do what pleases the Lord underscores the call for self-dedication and the pursuit of pleasing God rather than giving in to desires.
9.3 “Awake, O Sleeper!”
In Ephesians 5:11–14, Paul urges believers to be a light in a dark world and expose the works of darkness through their actions. He calls them to demonstrate God’s goodness, providing a clear alternative to dark behavior. This call is relevant, urging faith to rise, shedding spiritual slumber, and spreading the light of Christ in a world of darkness.
9.4 Snapping Up the Bargains
Paul urges believers in Ephesians 5:15-17 to live wisely and understand God’s will by acting deliberately. He encourages them to consciously use time, seizing the opportunities life offers, much like deal-seekers seeking valuable offers within a limited time. It’s about valuing time and utilizing moments for spiritual growth and fulfilling God’s will.
9.5 Spirit-Filled Worship
Paul encourages believers in Ephesians 5:18–20 to be filled with the Holy Spirit and gather in spiritual community during times of worship to encourage one another, sing, express themselves musically, and thank God. The focus is on God-inspired worship guided by the Holy Spirit, strengthening believers in their unity as they focus on the Lord Jesus Christ.
