🌅 Devotional for the Day
Jesus did not tell the parable of the ten virgins to frighten His followers, but to awaken them. All ten were waiting for the bridegroom. All of them had lamps. All of them fell asleep. Outwardly, many things appeared the same. But when the cry was heard, the decisive difference became clear: Some had oil, while others did not.
This parable speaks deeply to the subject of sanctification and character development. A lamp may be present outwardly, but without oil, it remains dark. In the same way, a person may possess outward forms of faith while inwardly lacking a living connection with Christ. Religion without the Holy Spirit is not enough. Knowledge without surrender cannot sustain us. Expectation without inward preparation remains empty.
Being ready when Jesus comes therefore means more than knowing that He is coming. It means being connected with Him today. The oil in the parable points to the work of the Holy Spirit within the heart. He alone makes faith alive. He alone shapes the character. He alone gives love, faithfulness, purity, patience, and spiritual vigilance.
The foolish virgins realized too late that they were missing something essential. This is a serious warning. Spiritual life cannot be borrowed at the final moment. Character is not formed in an instant, but through daily life with God. Those who live without Christ today cannot expect to be automatically ready tomorrow.
Yet the parable also contains hope. The wise virgins were ready, not because they were perfect in themselves, but because they had prepared what was necessary. We, too, may examine our lamps today—not with fear, but with honesty. Is love for Christ burning in my heart? Do I seek His presence every day? Do I allow the Holy Spirit to shape my character? Am I living in expectation of the coming King?
✨ The Lamp Needs Oil
A lamp without oil can only give the appearance that it will provide light. It has the form, but not the power. In the same way, a life of faith may appear outwardly correct while remaining inwardly powerless if the Holy Spirit is not working within the heart.
Ellen G. White wrote:
“Only those who are becoming like Christ will be able to stand when He appears.”
(Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 413)
Christlikeness does not develop through religious habits alone. It grows when the Spirit of God is given daily access to our hearts and shapes our thoughts, words, and actions.
🌿 Watchfulness in Daily Life
Watchfulness does not mean constantly searching anxiously for signs. True watchfulness means remaining spiritually alive. It is revealed when we refuse to become indifferent, avoid becoming trapped in routine, and do not allow our love for Christ to slowly die out.
Every day can bring fresh oil to the lamp: through prayer, God’s Word, obedience, surrender, forgiveness, service, and quiet fellowship with Jesus. These things may not appear spectacular, but they keep the heart awake.
🕊️ Ready When the Cry Is Heard
The cry in the parable came in the middle of the night: “Behold, the bridegroom is coming!” This cry reminds us that Jesus’ return is certain. The timing rests in God’s hands, but the opportunity for preparation is before us today.
Readiness is not an outward condition that can be produced quickly. It is a life that remains connected with Christ. It is a heart shaped by the Holy Spirit. It is a love that has not gone out. It is a character that has grown through everyday life.
The coming King does not call us merely to carry our lamps, but to keep them burning. Therefore, we may pray today: Lord, fill me anew with Your Spirit. Keep my heart awake. Let my life shine until You come.

Dear Father in Heaven,
keep my lamp burning.
Protect me from a faith that appears genuine outwardly but remains powerless within.
Fill me daily with Your Holy Spirit and shape my character according to the likeness of Jesus.
Help me live watchfully, faithfully, and spiritually alive as I await Christ’s return.
Make me ready when the cry is heard: The Bridegroom is coming.
Amen.
