📍 Introduction

After God has led Job through the wonders of creation, He calls on him to answer. Job recognizes his own limitations and falls silent. But God continues His speech and describes two mighty creatures – Behemoth and later Leviathan. They powerfully demonstrate that God’s strength extends far beyond human abilities. Job chapter 40 leads the reader to true humility before the Creator.

🧵 Commentary

At the beginning of the chapter, God addresses a direct question to Job: “Shall the one who contends with the Almighty correct Him?” In this way, He makes it clear that no human being is able to fully judge God’s actions. The Creator does not challenge Job in order to humiliate him, but to show him the limitations of his own perspective.

Job’s response is remarkable. He says: “Behold, I am insignificant; what shall I answer You? I lay my hand over my mouth.” For the first time, Job is silent not out of despair, but out of reverence. He recognizes that his words are inadequate in the face of God’s greatness.

But God continues speaking. He calls Job, figuratively speaking, to clothe himself like a judge and to consider whether he himself could rule the world with perfect justice. Could Job humble the proud, eliminate evil completely, or repay every person with perfect justice? The obvious answer is: No. Only God possesses the wisdom, power, and justice required to govern the universe.

In the second part of the chapter, God describes Behemoth – a mighty land creature whose strength and calmness impress the human observer. For centuries, people have debated exactly what kind of animal is meant. Some think of a hippopotamus or an elephant, while others see it as an especially powerful creature that no longer exists today. The decisive point, however, is not its exact zoological identification, but the message: Even this mighty being is merely a creature of God.

Behemoth eats grass like an ox, possesses enormous strength, and moves with impressive calmness. No one can overpower or control it by his own strength. Yet even this creature remains under God’s rule. What appears unconquerable to human beings is, for the Creator, simply part of His perfect creation.

Through these images, God leads Job away from his unanswered questions and toward worship. Not every mystery of life is explained, but God’s greatness becomes visible. Whoever recognizes that God rules even over the mightiest creatures can also entrust his own life to Him.

Job chapter 40 reminds us that humility is the beginning of true wisdom. Not because God wants to make human beings feel insignificant, but because only the recognition of His greatness opens our hearts to trust. Where pride becomes silent, faith can grow.
